At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
